Why Study Philosophy?

WHY STUDY PHILOSOPHY AT MTSAC?

REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD STUDY

PHILOSOPHY AT MT. SAC:

  1. AA degree in Philosophy: Fall 2018 we will be offering an Associate of Arts Degree in Philosophy. Only 6 Philosophy Classes along with general education courses can earn you this degree.
  1. English Requirement Satisfied: Philosophy class (Phil 9) fulfills the English Language Communication & Critical Thinking requirements for all CSU campuses (Phil 9 is equivalent to Eng 1C).
  1. Set Yourself Apart: Develop “creative, problem solving abilities that set you apart.” This will be an asset in any program you enter and in the work place!
    1. Fulfill CSU Requirements: Philosophy Courses Mt. San Antonio College fulfill the Arts & Humanities requirements for all CSU campuses.

    1. Research Opportunities: Build your resume as you complete specialized research. Independent study projects are part of this program.

    1. Public Relations: Many in the Public Service field have a background in Philosophy.

    1. Business: Philosophy majors have some of the highest scores in the GMAT (required by business schools).

    1. Law School Opportunities: Law schools know that philosophy is one of the best pre-law majors. The skills you develop while taking philosophy courses – such as careful, critical writing about detailed arguments – are the very ones you will need in law school. Philosophy majors typically do extremely well on the LSAT.

Medical School Opportunities: Philosophy is also an excellent pre-med major. A recent issue of a journal published by the American Medical School Association indicates that a “50.2% of Philosophy majors were accepted to medical school--much higher than, say Biology majors at a mere 39.9%... Philosophy majors make
    1. much more interesting applicants.” Moreover, a 1/3 of the MCAT test deals with philosophy and critical thinking.

    1. Great Salaries: According to the Educational Testing Services (ETS), philosophy majors with undergraduate degrees “have the fourth-highest median earnings, $81,200 per year, out-ranking business and chemistry majors… Bar none, philosophy majors have the highest salary growth trajectory from entry to mid-career.” In fact, Philosophy is “placed in the top 50 majors with the highest earnings,” ahead of biology and psychology.
