Honors Program Philosophy

An advanced course of study for superior students

Honors Program Goals:

1. Offer motivated students an opportunity to take transfer courses in a seminar

setting, surrounded by other aggressive students; these courses will follow the

course outline of the non-honors equivalent courses but will be "enhanced."

It is believed that the smaller class size and the chance to work with equally

motivated students will give these students a greater enthusiasm for learning,

a greater opportunity to play around with ideas, and a chance to test their intellects.

2. Allow students to take advantage of priority transfer agreements with

public and private universities within California.

3. Provide students with opportunities to explore the transfer possibilities

first hand through field trips to transfer universities.

What constitutes an Honors Student:

An honor student wants to challenge herself intellectually. She may be gifted

intellectually or very disciplined and hard working or well prepared or simply eager

to encounter new ideas. It is hoped that when she walks into class, she will have

confidence that all those around her are equally prepared and eager to address new

ideas and information. This shared attitude toward academics will act as a

stimulant, generating and maintaining a continued enthusiasm for learning.

What constitutes an Honors Course:

Students should have an opportunity to participate in the educational process more

directly through research, group discussion, group presentations, and/or individual presentations. This "process" should afford the students the opportunity to cover the required materials in more depth.
